"Hey, I just got Sega!"
That was in the late '90s, when one of my friends got a Genesis with Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and a few other non-Sonic games. He had gotten all the way to the "cool tank guy" with a drill on the front. Over the next while, we got to Death Egg, but couldn't beat the boss. Anyway, he and another friend got more Sonic games later, but I couldn't get any myself because I didn't have Genesis.
In 2003, my brother got Sonic Mega Collection (and because we share games, I can say SMC is my first Sonic game).
A little more than a year later, my brother wanted me to ask for Sonic Adventure DX for my birthday. I was kind of like, "sure, why not" at the time. (Imagine that now!) I thought it was an okay game, and although I hated parts of it, I kept playing so I could unlock all of the Game Gear goodies.
After I had completed the game, I started to do a bit of time-attacking, and I wanted to see how good other players were. I did a search for ranking sites and found Cyberscore. I worked at improving my times and getting anywhere near NintenDan's. I also made a list of challenges, and although they didn't work out so well, they became the start of my glitches guide and also made me a lot more familiar with the game and its stages. I don't remember exactly what happened, but I ended up asking about the world records, and NintenDan showed me the temporary charts for this site, which was down at the time.
Since then, I've improved a lot, finished the glitches guide, and set up a few other things (like maps). I almost took 1st place overall in SA, but F-Man got to it just before I was about to. We competed fiercely for a while, taking records back from each other almost constantly, but eventually got stuck/frustrated/whatever. (And I ended up not overtaking F-Man.) :( After being tired of it for a while, I got a Dreamcast in December 2006 and tried a bit of semi-casual time-attacking. I got some easy records, but since then, I've lost most (if not all) of my records (even my GCN Sonic times) to "newbies". (I feel like a has-been.) :( As for other games, I have tried a few others (Sonic Adventure 2, Sonic Heroes, Sonic Drift, and Sonic R) a bit, partly just to improve my overall ranking. I've played them a little more casually, like the Dreamcast version of Sonic Adventure. More fun, less stress and frustration.
For the last few years, I haven't done anything more than pick up the game for an hour or so, to see how rusty I am. It wouldn't take much to get back to maximum skill, but as of now, I don't really want to spend the time. (As of now, my Sonic enjoyment mainly consists of random stuff like recreating the scenes in 3-D (often with N64-ish polygon counts)) :P Will I ever play as seriously as before? Watch the next exciting episode of "Marth's TSC Rankings" next week! (Or next year. Or the year after that.)
