When you beat a level, you can play that level again in Challenge - from the 1 player menu. When you play a stage there your Time is recorded. The extra mission is where you select a stage, and press right. The objective of the mission changes. But for Team Sonic, you just have to beat it in a time limit. The stage is exactly the same, so no need for Sonic to be on extra missions. I don't know why there is a *.

oh! and also why theres just one team in Sonic Advance 3 if u can play with a lot of them?

1)It takes time automatically. TO view your time, select your team, then the level, then press A button. After this, move it to the right to view the second objective.
2)I dunno. Coding maybe? Or a spot for footnotes at the bottom of the page.
3) Team Sonic extra mission is the same exact level, only you have to finish in a time limit, therefore making it worthless to submit times for. You can pick th better of the 2 sonic missions to submit. Hope I helped you.

The Advance 3 rankings will be bigger when the site gets upgraded in a month or two.

I don't know why there is a *.
That's there so that when people look in New Times, they can distinguish "regular" missions from "extra" missions. Anything with a * is Extra.
